SebastiAn – Threnody

Our favorite Parisians over at Ed Banger Records have some new material for us. There’s a promo copy of a special compilation of unreleased tracks from artists on the label.

Included on there is a new one from SebastiAn titled Threnody, which proves to be quite a shocker on the record. True fans of SebastiAn’s music may be excited to hear that the track is eleven minutes long. I know I was…. until I listened to it. To tell the truth I feel strangely ambivalent about it. The reason being, there is a TEN MINUTE crescendo buildup of noise before the actual music begins. It’s not until the 11:20 that the track takes a turn and becomes a filthy, glitchy, distored, heavy-beat-driven banger that we’d expect from SebastiAn. Unfortunately, this only lasts about a minute and a half before you realize it’s over.

I don’t know what to think of it. All I can say is that it makes sense that they put Threnody on their “unreleased” compilation rather than on a real cataloged EP. Don’t just take my word for it. Give it a listen:

My fingers are crossed for some proper remixes to soon appear in the blogosphere…

Off topic/on a side note: Photos from Saturday’s house party hosted by the good people of YouTellConcerts will be up tomorrow. It was a blast. Stay tuned.

Who are you to cut the song of sebastian and to say “crap”?
Go away to buy a real musical aknowledge

you’re entitled to your own opinion… as am i.

i really don’t think the first bit of it is any good (or original for that matter). If sebastian was going for a novelty track that shocks his listeners, he could have done better. I suppose threnody seems to be just an attempt at a work of art…. in an atypical artform.
But it’s nothing remarkable.. http://www.artep.net/kam/symphony.html < the monotone symphony did the same thing 50 years ago. except it required more effort and planning.
This lackluster effort at a buildup doesn’t count (in my humble opinion) as any type of real, respectable, music…. Stoner listening candy though? perhaps.

    I agree

But it is not a simple song, it is a kind of masterpiece.
You can’t take just one part of a picasso picture for example.
It was what i wanted to explain :)

You have to remember sebastiAn is only like 21 years old. He may come with some good tracks but most of them follow the same beat grid and formula. I enjoyed actually listening to the whole thing but was disappointed when the beat dropped because it wasn’t anything new and spectacular. It was mediocre compared to his other songs. It’s the same glitch pattern + vocal chops you’d hear from him on most his songs. On the other hand I like the sound of the buildup. Just wish it led into something better.

No crap on the track. I just love the full original version. Anyway, here’s my special edit (but only the first part!). Hope you like it!.
